Abstract

Since 1521, Náhuatl has had a strong influence on Spanish and more than others the Spanish of Mexico that came to develop as a result of the forced language contact. Through a variety of interviews with members of the community in Wichita, a project was initiated to determine the social views on Spanish words of Náhuatl origin used in Mexican Spanish. This project has provided more evidence for a Phonestheme in Spanish and unlike English, in Spanish this phonestheme tends to give a negative impression or connotation. This presentation will focus on the findings and the implications it means for s future research.
