Abstract
This research examines the Rafael Caro Quintero real estate forfeiture as an example of how illicit proceeds may be concealed through property held by cartel leaders’ family members and located outside the United States. Using publicly available court records and government sources, the analysis considers how the properties were allegedly concealed, how U.S. and Mexican authorities ultimately pursued forfeiture, and what the case may suggest about challenges in detecting similar real estate holdings.
