Abstract

The pencil catfish Trichomycterus areolatus is native to Chile and a potential sentinel organism to detect agricultural runoff. T. areolatus is currently suffering population decline for unknown causes. This catfish is found in freshwater streams and is attracted to lower levels of water bodies. We detail the assembly and validation of the T. areolatus transcriptome, a molecular resource for the study of this organism and its environment. RNA-Seq reads were obtained by next-generation sequencing with an Illumina platform and processed using PRINSEQ. The assembly was performed using TRINITY assembler. Transcriptome annotation was performed with KOG, KEGG, and GO analysis. Additionally, differential expression analysis was included to detail tissue-specific expression patterns. A select list of endocrine related transcripts were included.
