Numerical Analysis of a Novel Thermoplastic Sandwich Core Material

A numerical investigation of the behavior of a novel thermoplastic honeycomb core material was conducted. This sandwich core material, known as Norcore®, consists of interconnected cells in a unique configuration of truncated pyramid with sloping cell walls. A finite element model of the unit cell structure was constructed using shell elements. Mechanical properties of polycarbonate core specimens of 25.4 mm and 50.8 mm thickness without facings reported by the manufacturer were used for comparisons with finite element analysis.
