Abstract

This presentation will discuss Partners in Performance. Partners in Performance was co-founded in 2015 and has partnered with 9 area schools to facilitate mentorship and music making in partner schools. Partners in Performance involves many different activities to help benefit area schools through music. These different activities include a mentorship retreat, a school residency, an on-campus clinic, and a side-by-side concert. Each component of Partners in Performance is unique and serves a unique purpose in meeting the needs and goals of area elementary, middle school, and high school students.

The Mentorship retreat serves as an introductory event for area high school students and UNO students where they come together through team building exercises and music making. The in-school residency component involves school visits by UNO, Omaha Area Youth Orchestra faculty and UNO students. During the residency, UNO students have the chance to work with and mentor area school students one-on-one. The on-campus clinic involves a side/by/side clinic with UNO students and faculty. During the on-campus clinic UNO students are able to implement theory into practice by mentoring area students in real time. The culminating event of Partners in Performance, the side/by/side concert, gives UNO students a sense of pride, knowing that their efforts make a big difference in the lives of others. Partners in Performance benefits us as students at UNO, as well as the students at our partner schools. We want to shape our community positively through music and Partners in Performance helps us reach that goal.
