Abstract

The three semi-circular canals, saccule, and utricle of the inner ear, the acoustic cranial nerve, the four vestibular nuclei in the brain system, and ascending and descending tracts of the central nervous system comprise the vestibular system. Responsible for body spatial information, reception and integration and reflexive motor control, this system is the neurological basis for human postural stability, modification of muscle tone, equilibrium and postural reactions of the trunk and extremities.
