Abstract

Research has shown that the concept of a specially trained counselor to work with gifted and talented elementary students is not new. This thesis was an investigation into the present-day need for a trained gifted and talented elementary counselor. Building principals, classroom teachers, parents of gifted and talented students, and gifted and talented students in two elementary buildings in each of four different school districts completed questionnaires. The hypothesis of the thesis is two-fold: there is the present day need for an educated elementary gifted and talented counselor; school personnel, parents, and students will express willingness to utilize this special program. Results of the questionnaires affirmed the need for the counseling program. Many teachers already are educated and familiar with gifted and talented and counseling concepts. The parents and students agree the counseling process would be an asset to their present gifted and talented program.
