Abstract

“Chamberlain gives last warning to Hitler; German high command reports army winning over poles,” was the headline which dispersed the fog of uncertainty that had enveloped the European situation in the summer of 1939. The false sense of security, into which the democracies had been seduced by Hitler’s dissembling at Munich, was dispelled by the Nazi annexation of Bohemia and Moravia on March 15, 1939. No longer could anyone harbor the delusion that Hitler’s aspirations were limited to the regaining of only German territory.
