Although long interesed in the dramatic aspects of military history, I must admit that I had little interest in the subject of military reform until the autumn of 1964. In a seminar conducted by Dr. A. Stanley Trickett on the reform movements in ninetheenth century Britian, I became aware of the miltary reforms which Edward Cardwell instituted in the British Army during his secretaryship at the War Office between 1868 and 1874.
