Abstract

The Census Bureau estimates the July 1, 2016 population of Nebraska to be 1,907,116. The state hit a new population milestone, exceeding the 1.9 million mark for the first time. Seven years passed between exceeding 1.8 million for the first time in 2009 and this new milestone in 2016. This 7-year timespan ties for the shortest such duration to gain 100,000 persons with the 7-year period from 1992 to 1999, when the state rose from 1.6 million to 1.7 million residents. See table below. Projections by our office in 2013 suggest it will take 9 years to move from 1.9 to 2.0 million residents, making 2025 the expected year to hit the 2 million person milestone (it will likely take a longer period of time to gain the next 100,000 as deaths will increase in the years ahead as the large baby boomer segment of the population ages into age groups with higher mortality).
