Abstract
The essay traces April Griess’s journey from artist to archivist, shaped by their interest in preserving personal and artistic materials, especially those of their late uncle, artist Kent Bellows. After earning a degree in moving image archiving, they began digitizing family home movies and organizing extensive archival materials, eventually returning to Omaha to care for them. They later became a digital archivist at the University of Nebraska Omaha, where they manage collections and address challenges like accessibility and ethical concerns around AI. Throughout, they emphasize how their artistic perspective informs their archival work, blending creativity with a caretaker’s responsibility.
