Abstract

The purpose of this study was to examine the impact of a cross-cultural clinical experience in the Dominica Republic on communication disorders graduate students. Ethical practice requires an awareness ad understanding one's own perspective and values and beliefs and awareness of cultural differences that arise when providing cross-cultural care (Riquelme, 2021). Learning emerges from this disorienting dilemma and the resulting cognitive dissonance that forces the participant to adjust their viewpoint and understanding to navigate and negotiate differences that arise between patient and provider.

A hermeneutic phenomenology coupled with a social constructivist interpretation was used to examine artifacts collected from to cohorts of speech language graduate students enrolled in the Interprofessional Global Class. After online and on-campus experience, faculty and students traveled to the Dominican Republic for immersive professional and cultural experiences in January 2023 and January 2024. Examination of the portfolios of students' pre, during, and post experience artifacts and reflections suggest that instruction and experiential learning encouraged awareness of cultural humility and cultural competence. Findings suggest that the experience cultivated a practice of reflection, developed knowledge of cultural frameworks, and built self-awareness and psychological flexibility. Such learning experiences may provide opportunities for students to grow in understanding the constraints of their own values and beliefs as they prepare to become caring clinicians supporting individuals and groups with diverse backgrounds and perspectives.
