International Dialogue

International Dialogue

Notes from the Editor

I am pleased to present the third volume of ID: International Dialogue, A Multidisciplinary Journal of World Affairs. It begins with three interesting articles authored by scholars residing in Sweden. In the first article, Per Bauhn argues that while there are similarities between the duty to rescue and the duty to aid the famine-stricken and starving, there are important differences. His conclusions not only cover the interindividual relations versus international relations difference, but also how the notion of agency is central for both kinds of duty. The second article is authored by Kristian Steiner. He provides us with a comparative study of how Swedish and German Christian Zionist literature from 1967–2012 portrays the chances for peace and the risk for war. Among his concluding remarks is the claim that this literature generally adheres to war theology. The third article is written by Pernilla Ouis, Göran Adamson, and Aje Carlbom. It investigates when multiculturalism is good for children. The authors conclude that multiculturalist policies have negative consequences for minority children’s rights in Sweden. These articles are followed by three review essays and twenty-one book reviews.

I thank the other editors and the board members for their assistance this year. I also thank Kathryn A. Cox Schwartz, the editorial assistant in Omaha and Tijana Okić, the administrative assistant in Sarajevo. I am also pleased to announce two additions to the editorial staff. Katherine Thurn, a recent graduate of UNO, is our newest administrative assistant. She will be working from Denver. Alice Pinheiro Walla, a teaching fellow at Trinity College Dublin, will serve as the journal’s second European book review editor.

I thank all those who reviewed manuscript submissions to ID over the past year. I am grateful for their adherence to deadlines and, most importantly, their insightful comments to both editors and authors. The following list includes board members and external referees who reviewed submissions for this volume:

  • Robert P. Churchill, The George Washington University
  • Debra L. DeLaet, Drake University
  • Jamie Frueh, Bridgewater College
  • Benjamin Gregg, University of Texas at Austin
  • Curtis Hutt, University of Nebraska at Omaha
  • Judith Lichtenberg, Georgetown University
  • Hilde Lidén, Institute for Social Research (Oslo)
  • Beverley Milton-Edwards, Queen’s University Belfast
  • Nicolae Roddy, Creighton University
  • Elizabeth Self, Eastern New Mexico University
  • Kristian Stokke, University of Oslo

Finally, on behalf of the editorial staff, I sadly announce the passing of one of ID’s original board members, Jean Bethke Elshtain. I knew Dr. Elshtain, the Laura Spelman Rockefeller professor of social and political ethics in the Divinity School at the University of Chicago, for her work on just war theory (Just War Against Terror: The Burden of American Power in a Violent World, 2003). She was a significant figure in this field. Dr. Elshtain was an extremely generous person with her time and energy, who did not think twice about joining the board of ID in 2007. Her remark that the journal was a “worthy effort” has sustained my efforts over the years. She will be missed by this editor.
