Military Courts, Civil-Military Relations, and the Legal Battle for Democracy: The Politics of Military Justice
Brett J. Kyle and Andrew G. Rieter
The interaction between military and civilian courts, the political power that legal prerogatives can provide to the armed forces, and the difficult process civilian politicians face in reforming military justice remain glaringly under-examined, despite their implications for the quality and survival of democracy. This book breaks new ground by providing a theoretically rich, global examination of the operation and reform of military courts in democratic countries. Drawing on a newly created dataset of 120 countries over more than two centuries, it presents the first comprehensive picture of the evolution of military justice across states and over time. Combined with qualitative historical case studies of Colombia, Portugal, Indonesia, Fiji, Brazil, Pakistan, and the United States, the book presents a new framework for understanding how civilian actors are able to gain or lose legal control of the armed forces. The book’s findings have important lessons for scholars and policymakers working in the fields of democracy, civil-military relations, human rights, and the rule of law.

A New Dawn for Latin American Militaries: Across the region, militarization is on the rise, posing a major threat to democracy and justice. What can be done?
Brett J. Kyle and Andrew G. Reiter
On July 26, 2018, thousands of protesters, led by the Abuelas de Plaza de Mayo, marched in Argentina to oppose President Mauricio Macri's plans to empower the military to engage in domestic policing. In a country where a military regime killed thousands of civilians between 1976 and 1983, the prospect of the military on the streets again has opened old wounds and incited a heated debate. Macri defended the change, which was implemented by two executive decrees, as being necessary to enable Argentina to face the security challenges of the 21st century, including drug trafficking and terrorism.

DISABILITY, INTIMACY, AND SEXUAL HEALTH: A SOCIAL WORK PERSPECTIVE
Kristen Faye Linton, Heidi Adams Rueda, and Lela Rankin Williams
Sexuality is a key aspect of human development and identity, yet people with disabilities frequently encounter social and political barriers to achieving healthy, autonomous intimate relationships. Society tends to associate disability with asexuality and often labels sexual behaviors among people with disabilities as problematic or deviant. Faced with these assumptions and resultant policies, how can social workers meet the needs of this diverse population across the life course.
In Disability, Intimacy, and Sexual Health: A Social Work Perspective, Linton, Adams Rueda, and Rankin Williams compile comprehensive research and candid interviews with social workers to explore the complicated intersection of disability and sexuality. The book begins by detailing historical violations of the sexual and reproductive rights of people with disabilities, including forced castration and sterilization. It then explores current issues of sexuality and disability throughout the life course, starting with childhood and adolescence. The authors examine the increased risk of abuse and victimization that people with disabilities face while in romantic or sexual relationships and provide practice recommendations to help combat factors that contribute to this vulnerability. Other milestones across the life course are also explored, such as pregnancy and parenting, marriage and cohabitation, and intimacy in older adulthood. Throughout the book, the authors examine the micro, meso, and macro systems that affect the lives and relationships of people with disabilities.
This book touches on psychiatric, intellectual, developmental, learning, neurological, and physical disabilities and gives voice to both practitioners and their clients. It is an unflinching look at the pressing challenges professionals can face while serving people with disabilities, essential for students, academics, policymakers, and practitioners in a variety of settings who wish to advocate for the full sexual citizenship of people with disabilities. -
Civil Society, Conflict and Violence
Wolfgang Dörner, Regina A. List, Mandeep S. Tiwana, and Brett J. Kyle
Editors: Wolfgang Dörner and Regina A. List
Chapter 6, The Law, Security and Civil Society Freedoms, co-authored by Brett Kyle, UNO faculty member.
This book looks at the role that civil society organizations play in dealing with conflict and violence. The authors argue that in most of the prevalent conceptualizations the conflict dimension of civil society is either downplayed or inadequately addressed. They contend that the ability to deal with conflict is at the heart of organized civil society; in the political process, one of civil society's key functions is to express and mediate between different interests, thus contributing to political decision-making.
The chapters draw on detailed, empirical data from the CIVICUS Civil Society Index - a unique comparative data-set drawn from 25 countries, which has not previously been made publicly available. It examines the different ways violence has been manifested in civil societies, the meaning of violent protest and the impact of security legislation that might hinder the mediating efforts of civil society. The book offers a sophisticated comparison between conflict and post-conflict countries and an analysis of the role of civil society in conflict resolution, reconciliation and transitional justice.

Project Animate: Promoting Student Civic Participation through Latino Voter Mobilization
Jonathan Benjamin-Alvarado
This project sought to expand voter outreach and mobilization of new registered and Latino voters through a series of activities to be undertaken in winter of 2007 leading up to the 2008 General Election in the greater Omaha metropolitan area. Following the successful development of a voter mobilization project undertaken in the 2006 election cycle, this project conducted a series of door-to-door canvassing activities utilizing University of Nebraska at Omaha students to distribute nonpartisan voter information, and engage in “get out the vote” activities with new Latino registered voters in Ward 4 of Douglas County, Nebraska and among Southeast Omaha’s predominately minority communities. Jahrbuch Jugendforschung
Angela Ittel, Ludwig Stecher, Hans Merkens, Jürgen Zinnecker, and Jonathan Bruce Santo
Chapter: Research on peers and adolescent development: What’s doing in North America?, co-authored by Jonathan Bruce Santo, UNO faculty member.
Peer relations research in North America has become increasing complex and divergent in its approaches, its topics, and its concerns. Whereas peer research at one time had been largely concerned with the univariate effects of rejection, acceptance and friendship, current research is concerned with the role of peer relations as mediators and moderators in modes that include multiple predictors and outcomes. Current topics of research on peer relations included processes, such as deviancy training and co-rumination, as well forms of interaction such as victimization, and types of negative relationships such as enemies. As in Europe, the study of peer relations during adolescence is alive and well in North America.

Examining the Impact of Parental Involvement in a Dual Language Program: Implications for Children and Schools
Juan F. Casas, Carey S. Ryan, Lisa Kelly-Vance, Bridget O. Ryalls, Angela Ferguson, and Collette Nero
Most native-born, English-speaking Americans – if they understood that developing the native language is good for English and good for longterm academic achievement – would support bilingual education. The problem is, almost none of them have heard the case. They have only heard the disinformation, coming from people who oppose these programs for extraneous (i.e., political) reasons (James Crawford, 1999).

Sleep: Physiology, Investigations and Medicine
Michel Billiard and Jonathan Bruce Santo
Chapter 40: Circadian rhythm sleep disorders related to an abnormal escape of the sleep-wake cycle, co-authored by Jonathan Bruce Santo, UNO faculty member.
Sleep medicine is a recent discipline but its field of knowledge is already extensive. This results from the progress made in understanding sleep-wake mechanisms, the development of reliable means of investigation, and advances in our knowledge of the nosology of the disorders of sleep and wakefulness.
This volume comprises five sections: the first looks at the semiotics of normal sleep in adults and children, sleep mechanisms and the major physiological functions and mental activity during sleep. The second section is a review of the different means of investigating sleep and wakefulness and the methods of analysis currently available. The third section deals with the disorders of sleep and wakefulness, insomnias, hypersomnias, circadian rhythm sleep disorders and parasomnias. The fourth section describes a number of medical disorders which are either sleep-related or simply exacerbated by sleep: snoring, chronic obstructive lung diseases, restless legs syndrome or periodic limb movement disorder, sleep epilepsies, etc. The final section encompasses disorders which are not sleep-dependent but to which sleep investigations may add further insight, such as mood disorders, certain neurological pathologies, dysautonomias, and again, epilepsy. The appendix contains questionnaires, indexes, and assessment scales designed to assist the clinician in evaluating the different disorders. The present edition, written in English is a complete revision of the two preceding French editions. It represents the work of European and North and South American specialists.
