Abstract
Since 2013, there have been a total of 824 federal criminal cases involving threats against public officials nationwide. The trend has increased significantly in recent years. In 2025, there have been 133 federally charged threat cases, setting a new annual record and surpassing the previous high of 104 in 2024. This continuing upward trajectory reflects the combination of the increasing volume in threat activity across the nation and greater responsiveness of federal authorities attempting to address this particular type of criminal violation.
This escalation is not isolated to any single region. In 2025 alone, individuals have been federally charged with making threats to public officials in 35 states and the District of Columbia, underscoring the widespread nature of the issue.
