Abstract

Service learning in civic education, a combination of in-school learning and out-of-school work designed to enhance democratic education and assist the community, may appear to be an innovation of our times. However, study of the community fused to action in the community is not a new idea. Discussions of the attributes of learning from community experiences related to the school curriculum can be found in literature on civic education since the turn of the century.
