Abstract

The goal of this project is to modernize endoscopic procedures, more specifically colonoscopies. Modernization of colorectal screenings can improve the rate at which patients at risk of developing polyps and ulcers carry timely screenings. Discomfort and risks associated with the procedure are major deterrents for patients. This study implements image-processing algorithms to provide a colonoscope with an increased accuracy of direction when the invasive procedure is being carried. The head of the colonoscope autonomously tilts as it travels the rectum, descending colon, transverse colon and ascending colon. The outcome of this research can provide specialists with assistive tools when carrying invasive procedures and give the patient reassurance.
