Abstract
The context for this study of volunteers and voluntolds are open source projects. Open source projects were traditionally groups of volunteers who collaborated to develop open source software. Increasingly, employees participate in open source on behalf of the organization that employs them. Employees, who are given no choice about volunteering, are voluntold to spend their time on open source projects. The interactions within open source project, however, continue to be shaped by the values that arose from the time when everyone was a volunteer.
