Abstract

Smartphone usage is growing rapidly around the world, partially due to increased accessibility and affordability. Prior research has found the presence of smartphones as a concern for learning and educational outcomes. In this study, we sought to quantify smartphone usage inside the classroom and seek students' perceptions of their smartphone usage among undergraduate university students enrolled in two sections of database management classes. Our results indicate that smartphone presence during lectures played a negative role in students' learning.
