Abstract
First-time leadership positions can be daunting, as first-time leaders are challenged with both (1) "claiming" a leader identity they did not have before and (2) being "granted" that leader identity by their first-ever followers. This challenge is likely to take a toll on first-time leaders, potentially creating a high demand for emotional labor. Accordingly, it seems particularly important that we understand the extent to which leader emotional labor is present in first-time leaders.
