Abstract
There is no doubt that Latinos will fuel the future population growth of the state. While this growth will come mostly from US-born Latinos, immigrants from Latin America will also continue choosing Nebraska as their residency. Embedded within OLLAS’ Observatory of Latinos in Nebraska our project seeks to document and analyze the presence and representation of Latinos in the Nebraska Press. In order to do this, we did a qualitative content analysis of a sample of articles published by Nebraska newspapers published between January 1 of 2000 and December 31 of 2019. Using three keywords—Latinos, undocumented/illegal, immigration—we explore the different conversations the media is proposing in relation to Latinos in Nebraska. In our analysis, we look at frames, themes, geographies, and who ‘speaks’ throughout these articles. This analysis allows us to characterize the possible changes in the context of reception this growing minority and other immigrants are confronting.
