Abstract
The purpose of this qualitative study is to explore how employees in nonprofit organizations that promote democracy and civic engagement describe their work. The existing scholarship demonstrates that nonprofits are both complicit in and an effect of the hegemonic system of neoliberalism. What emerges in the nonprofit sector is a profound tension between meeting the demands of the market and the demands of civil society. In understanding the experiences and perspectives of nonprofit workers and the values that are brought to bear in their work, this research extends the existing literature by exploring how workers diverge and reinforce neoliberal logic and power within civic nonprofit organizations. The findings of this research suggest that workers in nonprofits that promote democracy and civic engagement exhibit values that depart from neoliberalism .
