Abstract

My 3D Found Object sculpture, known as the Soul of the S.S. Silverton, is about repurposing non-artistic items into something new.

For this boat made up of plastic utensils, I wanted to represent how we can deal with water pollution by remaking trash into treasure.

The boat is more valuable to me because it represents where my family came from: the Phillippines. As a developing country located in the southern hemisphere, there is no denying how much hardship my family lived through. However, they persisted through their tough circumstances by changing the way they viewed their challenges as opportunities to make them stronger.

Today, I see the purpose of their lessons by changing the way I see the obstacles in my life, especially with a boat made out of utensils.

In other words, the Soul of the S.S. Silverton is not only about rehashing trash into treasure. Instead, it is an embodiment of my life as an American Filipino who can endure through the storm no matter what.
