Abstract

The early 1930's were not a heroic time for Great Britain, any more than for the rest of the world. It was a period marked by the need for burgeoning welfare payments and great social unrest at home, and by the reemergence of Germany under Adolf Hitler on the continent. The prevalent emotion of the time was that of gloom, which put the thirties into sharp contrast to the 1920's, a time of generally high hopes. It it representative of the emotions felt during the time to note that Walter Greenwood's play, Love on a Dole, was one of the period's most popular dramas.
