Abstract

The counselor at the elementary school level has the opportunity to work with children during the critical period in which their self-concepts and life styles are being formulated and their basic attitudes toward others and society are emerging. Children at this developmental stage need contact with a person who listens, who understands, and who helps them to explore alternatives, clarify personal meanings, establish commitments, and mature in personal and social development (Dinkmeyer, 1973).
