Abstract
American women have a gift of time which no other group of women in the history of the world have had, The average life-span is approaching 80 years compared to 47 years at the turn of the century (Osborn, 1977). Industrial research and technology have eliminated much of the drudgery in the home. Now, anxiety of preparing for additional years and hours without the 'benefit of structure, while attempting to satisfy one's own needs and the needs of many others, produces a "challenging uncom fortableness" among women today. This phenomenon is often interpreted as abnormal behavior, eliciting such comments as, "what's wrong with women today-they have everything and still they are not happy?" (Osborn, 1977).
