Abstract

The body of Vocal Works of Manuel Rosenthal is divided into three parts. In the first part an overview of Rosenthal's life is presented since in the United States biographical information is only available through journal articles and short summaries in reference books about twentieth-century composers. The second part includes information about the songs Rosenthal wrote. The information is compiled in such a way as to help teachers and singers draw on this substantial body of work in twentieth-century French vocal literature for recitals and symphonic programs. The third part consists of translations of twenty-five of the songs from French to English. These translations are intended to aid the singer in study and preparation for performance. A chronological list of Rosenthal's compositions is included at the end of this paper.
