Abstract
Queen Victoria reigned from 1837 until 1901. Christina Georgina Rossetti's life span the years 1830 to 1894. Thus, she is placed, historically speaking, squarely within the Victorian age with all its attending connotations, both negative and positive. Among the traits of Victorian England that stand out: the dominance of sometimes sincere, sometimes hypocritical ideals of decency, modesty, and respectability; the tremendous intellectual ferment created by the new science, accompanied by rising philosophical and religious doubts; changing social conditions brought on by the new industrial character of England; and, in literature, a curious combination of reality and romance.
