Abstract
This study examines the potential use of Weapons of Mass Destruction in Violent Extremists Organizations by assessing the intent and capability of three militant groups: Al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula, Al-Shabaab, and the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria. In particular, the research explores which fringe militant group is best positioned to purse a Weapons of Mass Destruction attack based on various factors. Specifically, variables that pertain to the groups’ ideology, demographic & and group composition, group perception of itself, human capital, and financial capital will be analyzed to answer which militant group has the greatest ability to conduct an attack with a weapon of mass destruction.
