Abstract
Early career digital preservationists often bring a high level of curiosity and enthusiasm to their first professional jobs. This energy aligns well with the digital preservation field, which is defined by rapid technological change and innovation. However, that early momentum can quickly wane as they face an ever-expanding set of responsibilities, including institutional backlogs, research and instruction, and evaluating new technologies. These pressures are further compounded by the need to continually articulate the value of digital preservation work to colleagues and administrators amid increasing financial uncertainty.
Have you ever asked questions like: How can I make long-term plans for my career with the unsustainable financial outlook in the GLAM sector? As a newer professional, how can I uphold my professional ethics and values in discussions around adopting AI tools or DEI principles? Who can I turn to when I feel alone in my struggles as an early career digital preservationist?
In this session, the presenters will share candid reflections grappling with these questions and more. They will offer practical insights and potential strategies to address burnout, combat imposter syndrome, connect with supportive professional networks, and cultivate a sustainable values-driven career outlook. Because digital preservation depends as much on people as on technology, early career professionals must be equipped with sustainable career practices so that they can develop into resilient, long-tenured contributors who strengthen the field for years to come.
