Abstract

In the early hours of Cinco de Mayo in St. Petersburg, Florida, my grandmother, Carmen Ramos, passed away peacefully in her sleep. Nana had been hospitalized in March with a case of pneumonia that was cause for alarm during the outbreak, but as it turned out, her test for COVID-19 proved negative. Notwithstanding, she was denied visitors, new medical protocols being what they were. This was very different from how she remembered previous hospital stays, busy with family and flowers and Mylar balloons, and when she finally felt like herself again, she badgered staff to discharge her as soon as possible.
