Abstract
In 2019, the Midlands Sexual Health Research Collaborative completed a comprehensive, statewide needs assessment of Nebraska LGBTQ+ residents. The assessment consisted of ninety-one survey questions which gathered information about discrimination, violence, health, social engagement, and community empowerment. This research utilizes the data collected in this needs assessment to examine how outness impacts LGBTQ+ individuals’ well-being. In order to measure this impact, the researchers conducted quantitative data analyses on outness and a few other measurements of well-being, including: physical health, mental health, social engagement, and community empowerment. In doing this research, the researchers hope to shed light on the long-term impacts of having to hide one’s identity, so that communities can begin to create solutions to better support LGBTQ+ individuals.
