Abstract
In conventional recruitment, managers use influence to change attitudes or behavior. More specifically, they use inspirational appeals to change behavior by targeting a person’s sense of justice, humanitarianism, and loyalty (Yukl & Falbe, 1990). Using inspirational appeals in narratives connects the audience’s emotions, loyalty, and humanitarianism to the story and helps them imagine the uncertainties they often do not face, such as violence in everyday life (Kirmayer, 2003). Violent extremist groups, such as Right Wing Extremists also use a storytelling format to appeal to a reader’s emotions, encouraging a change in views and attitudes (Stevenson, 2019). In this thesis, I measure how inspirational appeals used in narratives can cause a behavior and attitude change towards refugees among an uncommitted population of college students. In addition, to measure if using inspiration appeals can be used to denigrate recruitment of violent extremist groups and prevent negative perceptions.
