Abstract
Although engaging in retirement planning is associated with better adjustment to retirement, current research highlights that many individuals are not planning for retirement (Liu et al., 2021). Furthermore, those who do plan for retirement tend to focus only on financial planning (Liu et al., 2021). However, people have a more difficult time adjusting to retirement if they inadequately prepare for other aspects of well-being (e.g., physical, psychological, and social) in addition to financial planning (Liu et al., 2021; Seidl et al., 2021). Thus, the purpose of this scoping review is to investigate quantitative measures that could be utilized to assess multidimensional retirement planning among young, middle-aged, and older adults in the United States. PsycINFO, Pubmed (Medline), and Business Source Complete will be systematically searched to include research published through 2023. The search terms will include retirement, planning, preparation, scale, measurement, and psychometrics. Articles will be included if they involve a measure that assesses aspects of the retirement planning process (e.g., preparations, goals) and be quantitative studies that have a component that involves psychometric properties (e.g., reliability and/or validity). The results of this scoping review will highlight what gaps exist in the multidimensional retirement planning measures for young, middle, and older adult populations in the United States. Future directions will provide recommendations for how to address these gaps.
