"La La Land" and the World of Film Score Arranging

We need a piano and two music stands.

Abstract

Over the past few weeks, we worked on arranging the music of La La Land (2016) for two flutes (Flute I doubling piccolo) and piano. This being our first arranging project, we are excited to talk about our process and perform our finished piece for the Creative Research Fair.

Though some performers shy away from arranging and composing, they are beneficial skills to have as a musician. Although arranging is not writing music from scratch, to do so correctly requires extensive knowledge of music theory, instrument function, harmonic progression, and creative style. If a piece is not written for your instrument(s), arranging is often your only option.

The lack of flute arrangements from this film score inspired us to start this project. We love La La Land largely because of the excellent music, which was composed by Justin Horowitz and won “Best Score” and “Best Original Song” at the 89th Academy Awards. To perform the music as a flute duo, we had to arrange our own version. The original music prominently features flute and vocal melodies that were easily transferable to the flute.
