Abstract

Covid-19 became a global issue in March of 2020. For a few months, the entire world went into quarantine. People all over the world were isolated in their homes and were deprived of their social activities. This became more apparent for students living with autism. Students with autism were deprived of valuable learning time and social skills in the classroom. Autism Spectrum Disorder is a developmental disabilities that is caused by differences in the brain. Autism Spectrum Disorder can present itself in many different ways depending on the individual. I conducted this research in fall of 2022 as an honors project for SPED 2300. This project describes the educational impact of students with autism in the rural parts of Nebraska. I dived into what teachers and parents think need to happen in order to improve the educational experience for their students and or child. Specifically, I conducted interviews with a Special Education professor from the University of Nebraska Kearney, a general education teacher from Louisville Public Schools, and a family with a child living with autism from Bellevue Public Schools. There are a significant amount of federal funds going towards education in the state of Nebraska. The federal funds are not being evenly distributed and thus causing an academic impact on students living with autism. Students that are living in rural areas are being deprived of the same education opportunities due to funding. Students with disabilities, especially autism are the most impacted in these cases.
