Abstract
Collaboration and teamwork are common concerns among managers who are hesitant to allow employees to permanently work remotely (Wang et al., 2020); however, employee pushback and tight labor markets have stopped many from requiring employees to return to the office (Kilcullen et al., 2021). While remote and virtual teams are a key focus of current research, psychological factors such as team dynamics may be more important to a team’s effectiveness than work location (Tannenbaum & Salas, 2021). The current study explored these different factors and their effects on perceptions of team effectiveness.
We collected data from 495 participants working in healthcare via Prolific. Prolific provided access to research participants, who completed an online survey asking them to evaluate their team’s effectiveness (e.g., completing work, meeting goals), rate the quality of their team’s dynamics, and indicate on a scale whether they worked in person, virtually, or somewhere in between. On team effectiveness, a significant interaction between work environment and the quality of team dynamics emerged (ΔR2 = .05, p < .001). Individuals who indicated high-quality team dynamics rated team effectiveness similarly, regardless of work location. However, when participants rated team dynamics as low quality, those working primarily in person reported lower team effectiveness than those working in a more remote environment. This finding suggests that working remotely may benefit a team’s effectiveness if team dynamics are strained or they lack necessary organizational support. This research also supports the promotion of high-quality team dynamics for improved team effectiveness regardless of work environment.
