Abstract

This work was inspired by the fragile and fleeting moments of childhood, reflecting on the passage of time compared to the way seasons change. The medium of vine charcoal used to express figuration was inspired by artists such as Edgar Jerins and Kathe Kollwitz, while the subject matter of a child through a mother’s lens is inspired by works of Mary Cassatt. The figure in the composition is that of my own daughter who inspires me endlessly, and reminds me of myself as a child. The pose and action of her holding the dandelion highlights the fragility and delicate nature of Springtime and early childhood, which almost seem synonymous to me. Early childhood can be seen as a springtime in the phases of life.
