Abstract
The purpose of this lecture recital is to discuss and perform Marius Flothuis’s Aubade (1914-2001). Flothuis was a vocal left-winged resistant to censorship during WWII. Because of this, he was imprisoned in the Vught concentration camp, and lost his position in the Concertgebouw Orchestra. Aubade was written during Flothuis’s time in the Vught concentration camp and seems to be reflective of his circumstances during his imprisonment. This piece was written as a gift for his dear friend Everard van Royen, a flutist himself, and Royen premiered the piece on the dawn of his birthday. This was answered by a performance of “Ave Maria” from the woman’s dormitory. This discussion will revolve around the purpose behind writing this composition, and the motifs of grief and defiance repeated throughout the piece, followed by a performance of this piece.
