Abstract
Anyone who has worked in the field of history knows that outside the classroom, it is much more vibrant than students are led to believe. This leaves the history instructor with a question, how does an educators show students the dynamic side of the field? One of the ways is to transform the curriculum into something more learner centered using a model similar to Bernard College’s “Reacting to the Past” series of texts. This approach fosters critical thinking and a deeper understanding of the subject matter as students make decisions and find themselves engaged with one another as they roleplay their collective narratives. This approach involves the use of role-playing games and simulations to engage students in active learning within the context of historical events or debates. With these texts, students assume the roles of historical figures, meticulously researching and adopting their characters' perspectives, beliefs, and values. During the game, players will take on an assigned role of specific historical participant who was present at the 1825 Treaty of Prairie du Chien, and given their background and information do their best to negotiate a treaty.
