Abstract
Eric Hugh Blair Was born of Scottish descent in Motihari, India, in 1903. A British citizen, his father was an official in the Opium Department of the Indian Civil Service. At an early age Eric was sent back to England, and in 1911, at the age of eight, was sent to a prep school on the Southern coast. Four years later he won scholarships to both Eton and Wellington, choosing Eton. He was advised upon leaving Eton not to go to a university but to take a job abroad and see the world, so he joined the Indian Imperial Police in Burma. He took his duties in the Police very seriously and felt that he was not suited for the job. After five years he returned to England and subsequently submitted his resignation.
