Abstract

In this study/performance, LeVan researches the West African pre-cursor to modern mallet called instrument the gyil. The gyil is a small mallet instrument that is suspended about a foot and a half above the ground and typically has 14 differently tuned wooden bars. The resonators of this instrument are gourds grown to specific measurements, hollowed out, and stuff with spider nests in order to give the sound of the wooden bars a buzzing texture. This instrument is used to carry culture throughout West Africa, specifically Ghana.
