Abstract
The purpose of this project is to creatively explore cross-modal correspondences between the gustatory and auditory systems. Existing research shows that the senses are inextricably entwined. Sound impacts our experience of food and drink; capable of changing the perception of taste, flavor, and texture, to shifting the perception of its hedonic valence (enjoyableness), price, and authenticity. Research has also shown that there are consistent associations between tastes and musical aspects. The current body of studies on auditory and gustatory correspondences begin with the food or drink and then compose music to specifically enhance certain qualities to affect the consumption experience. This project is inverting the process, beginning with existing music from the flute repertoire and creating food pairings to go with each movement. The end goal is a recital that will consist of a live music and dining experience, where the food and music will be equally elevated and informed by each other. For the Creative Research Fair, we will perform a short selection of music paired with specially designed food, to demonstrate cross-modal correspondences and highlight our creative process for developing a meaningful intersection of the musical and culinary arts.
The final recital will be designed and presented in collaboration with the University of Nebraska at Omaha and the Metropolitan Community College Culinary School. In addition, this project will invest in the local community by mentoring Blackburn High School culinary students with assistance of the Service Learning Academy at UNO and sourcing local ingredients for our dishes when possible.
