Abstract

The purpose of this project was to develop new and also improve upon current MRI contrast agents to increase the length of contrast enhancement. This would mean the agents stay in the body longer compared to MRI contrast agents currently in use. This is important because not as much contrast agent has to be used to achieve the same enhancement and this helps improves the diagnostic accuracy of the MRI scan. MRI with contrast is a vital diagnostic tool because it is superior at measuring and assessing tumors. Contrast helps detect even the smallest of tumors and MRI images with contrast are clearer and better quality than the images without contrast. The long term purpose of the project is to aid in image guided gene delivery. In the project, Gd and Eu were used as metals for their similar characteristics and ability to alter MRI properties while diethylenetriamine pentaacetate (DTPA) was used as a chelating agent.
